FAQ

Are Ablu products natural?

Yes, but…

There is no standardized definition of the word "natural" in relation to cosmetics or personal care and since the word is such a potent marketing tool, its meaning is increasingly elusive. Some might consider only raw, unprocessed ingredients to be “natural” while others claim that nearly all ingredients are “natural” since they originate with animal, vegetable or mineral matter found on planet Earth. Unless you use supernatural ingredients to make your products.

It is important to remember that chemistry is what makes modern skincare and cosmetics possible. The chemical reactions and processes that convert freshly harvested cactus pads or a pail of goat milk to a finished beauty product are complex and do not occur spontaneously in nature. Chemistry is what delivers the benefits from these raw, natural ingredients to your skin and hair.

We consider Ablu products to be natural because at the heart of every formula are powerful naturally-occurring botanical ingredients. We limit our use of synthetic colorants (only in small percentages in lip tints) and use renewable, biodegradable materials. Our goal is to source local and organic as much as possible and to choose all ingredients conscientiously, with sustainable practices in mind.

Do you use preservatives?

All of our water-based products are preserved. If we didn't use preservatives in these formulas, the product shelf life would be very short and refrigeration would be required. Our anhydrous (water-free) products - such as oils, balms, soap - do not contain preservatives. We have chosen to use paraben-free preservative systems.

Are your products vegan?

We use local goat milk, beeswax, propolis, honey and medical-grade lanolin in several Ablu products. These ingredients are cruelty-free and bring unique benefits to your skin. The following products are vegan: body lotions (except baby cream which contains honey extract), body butter, body oil, body scrubs, hand cream, Castile soap (liquid and bar), salt soap, beer soap, bug spray, rose & lavender mists, cleansing milk, micellar cleanser, hydrating toner, day cream, face polish, cleansing oil, eye cream, lip scrub, botanical muscle rub, leave-in conditioner, mineral bath salts, bath teas.

Are essential oils irritating to the skin?

Some essential oils, as well as synthetic fragrances, can cause irritation, especially to more delicate facial skin. However, many essential oils have highly beneficial properties for skincare if chosen with their aromatherapeutic properties in mind. For our facial products, we use thoughtfully selected essential oils (e.g. lavender, lemongrass, rosemary)--mostly in rinse-off products--and don't use any synthetic fragrances. We use essential oils to scent our body, bath and hair products.

Are your products organic?

We are continually seeking out organic sources for raw materials in Mexico. At the moment, Ablu uses organic aloe vera, organic vanilla, organic coconut oil, organic coconut water, and organic hibiscus. Our liquid Castille soap is also organic. We are proud to support The Lavender Project as our supplier of lavender and rosemary distillates and essential oils. This farm and social enterprise in the community of La Colorada provides employment and social programs for the local population and while not organic, their farming practices are environmentally responsible and sustainable. Please check back for updated information as we find more organic suppliers.

Where are Ablu products made?

We make all our products in small batches in our laboratory here in San Miguel. Each product is made and packaged by hand.

Are your products cruelty-free?

Ablu products are only tested on ourselves. We work with and continually seek out raw material suppliers who have a no animal-testing policy in place. We purchase goat milk, honey, beeswax and propolis from local farmers and beekeepers committed to humane treatment of their animals.
